About Icelandic Typing
Icelandic uses several special characters that aren't found on standard English keyboards. This tool makes it easy to type in Icelandic with all the proper letters.
The Icelandic alphabet includes the following special characters:
- Á/á, É/é, Í/í, Ó/ó, Ú/ú, Ý/ý - vowels with acute accents
- Æ/æ - represents the diphthong /ai/
- Ö/ö - represents the vowel /œ/
- Þ/þ (thorn) - represents the voiceless dental fricative /θ/ (like 'th' in "think")
- Ð/ð (eth) - represents the voiced dental fricative /ð/ (like 'th' in "this")
Icelandic is one of the few languages that still uses the letters þ (thorn) and ð (eth), which were once common in many Germanic languages. The language has changed relatively little since the 12th century, allowing modern Icelanders to read ancient texts with relative ease.
Simply click on the character you need to insert it into your text. You can then copy and paste your text into any application that supports Unicode text.
