About Portuguese Typing

Portuguese uses several special characters with diacritical marks that aren't found on standard English keyboards. This tool makes it easy to type in Portuguese with all the proper accents.

Portuguese uses the following diacritical marks:

  • Acute accent (á, é, í, ó, ú) - indicates stress and open vowels
  • Circumflex (â, ê, ô) - indicates stress and closed vowels
  • Tilde (ã, õ) - indicates nasal vowels
  • Grave accent (à) - used in contractions with the article "a"
  • Diaeresis/umlaut (ü) - rare, used only in some words
  • Cedilla (ç) - indicates a "s" sound before a, o, and u

These diacritical marks are essential for proper Portuguese spelling and pronunciation. They can change the meaning of words, such as "avô" (grandfather) and "avó" (grandmother), or indicate grammatical features.

Simply click on the character you need to insert it into your text. You can then copy and paste your text into any application that supports Unicode text.
